Reliable Digital Payments May Get Easier For Cannabis Retailers In New Lüt–Safe Harbor Deal
Lüt, a new financial ecosystem featuring a closed-loop digital payments platform for cannabis and other high-risk industries, this week announced it has entered into a partnership with leading financial services provider Safe Harbor. The new collaboration aims to facilitate reliable and compliant payment services for cannabis operators, who often face challenges securing dependable transaction processing systems.
The new alliance designates Lüt as a Safe Harbor Advantage Partner for closed‑loop payments, widening access to compliant digital transactions backed by guaranteed funds for cannabis and other high‑risk retailers. By pairing Safe Harbor’s compliance‑driven banking infrastructure with Lüt’s closed‑loop system, Lüt Reserve, the collaboration offers a payment option that bypasses traditional methods and secures funds upfront.
“We both share a compliance-first philosophy and a long-term view of building sustainable financial infrastructure for regulated industries,” Michael Andrud, CEO of Lüt, said in a statement from the company. “This partnership with Safe Harbor signals to the banking industry that compliant, guaranteed-funds digital payments for high-risk industries are operational, scalable, and built to support long-term growth for regulated industries.”
Closed-Loop Payment System Bypasses Credit Card Networks
As a Safe Harbor Advantage Partner, Lüt Reserve delivers a closed‑loop payment system that operates independently of traditional card networks. The platform uses a good‑funds digital wallet model that pre‑authorizes transactions, which helps merchants move away from cash, avoid NSF exposure and guard against abrupt card network disruptions. Lüt supports in‑store and delivery sales, payroll, vendor payments, general operating expenses and e‑commerce, all while keeping every transaction inside the regulated banking framework.
“This partnership strengthens our suite of financial solutions and underscores Safe Harbor’s leadership in delivering safe and compliant financial services to the industry,” said Ean Mullins, Safe Harbor’s SVP of product development and strategic alliances.
For merchants, the collaboration offers guaranteed funds, less cash to manage and reliable access to digital payments across every sales channel. Shoppers gain a quicker, more transparent checkout, the opportunity to earn real cashback rewards and greater confidence in how their transactions are handled.
Partnership Offers Security and Convenience for Cannabis Operators
Andrud tells IgniteIt that the new partnership between Lüt and Safe Harbor addresses a significant challenge for cannabis retailers.
“Cannabis retailers and delivery operators are frustrated because payment systems tend to fail when they need them most. Platforms go down during busy hours, traditional card networks still refuse to support the industry, and many businesses are stuck handling cash and change even as everything else around them is going digital,” he says in a written interview. “Pay by Bank or ACH solutions have helped in some cases, but they also introduce real NSF risk and fraud exposure. On top of that, many of those solutions weren’t built to fully support eCommerce or delivery, which are where many businesses are trying to grow.”
Andrud adds that Lüt integrates with existing programs and systems that operators already use, making it easy for merchants to take advantage of the new partnership with Safe Harbor.
“We built Lüt to work with the tools business owners are already using. Lüt Reserve uses robust and flexible APIs that make it easy to connect with existing POS, eCommerce, and loyalty systems,” he explains. “The goal is for business owners to keep running their business the way they do today, while adding Lüt Reserve as a compliant, reliable way to get paid.”
